Galle Fortress

Galle was a prominent see port long before western rule in the country and cinnamon was exported from Sri Lanka, based on Galle port as early as 1400 BC. The Galle fortress was built firstly by the Portuguese in 1619 and later In 1640, Dutch captured the fortress and developed and expanded it, according to Dutch architectural style which could be seen even today. Still, Dutch buildings could be seen in Galle and the city of Galle been declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO.
