Kandy

Kandy, the last royal kingdom of Sri Lanka is a major tourist destination. It situated 115km away from Colombo and 488 meters above sea level. Kandy kingdom was established in the 16th century AD and was the last royal capital which ended the royal rule after 2500 years. In 1592, King Wimaladharma Suriya constructed the Kandy temple to place the tooth relic of Buddha which remains even today. Last 9 kings ware ruling the country from Kandy kingdom and ended in 1815 with capturing of entire country by British. City of Kandy is the world heritage site declared by UNESCO.

Temple Of Tooth Relic

To Buddhist devotees of Sri Lanka and the world, Kandy is one of the most secret sites as it is the home of “Dantha Dhathu”, temple of the Secret Tooth Relic of Buddha. The Secret tooth relic of the Buddha is the most venerated object of worship for Buddhists.The tooth relic is removed from its shrine only once a year, during the Esala Perahera, a 10 day torchlight parade of dancers, drummers, dignitaries and caparison elephants. It is now of the better known festival in Asia and it may be the largest Buddhist celebration in the world.
