Sinharaja Rain Forest has been designated as Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and WorId Heritage Site, in 1988 by UNESCO. It is hilly virgin rainforest, spread over an area of 11,250 hectares of forest land. Highest amount of endemic animals are found in Sinharaja forest. Commonly sighted animals are giant squirrel, purple faced monkey, red faced malkoha, green- billed caucal, dusty- stripped jungle squirrel, blue magpie …etc. Sinharaja forest is a national park and rich biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. There are 26 endemic birds and 20 endemic species of flora available. Trekking through this magnificent jungle with highly exotic colours and wonderful sounds of nature is a truly enriching experience.
