Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)

Adam's Peak, known locally as Sri Pada ('Sacred Footprint') and Samanalakanda ('Butterfly Mountain'), is a majestic 2,243-meter (7,359 feet) pyramid-shaped mountain rising dramatically above the mist-cloaked cloud forests of the central highlands. For over a thousand years, this sacred peak has stood as a unique pilgrimage destination revered by four major world religions: Buddhists believe the 1.8-meter rock indentation atop the summit is the sacred footprint left by Lord Buddha; Hindus revere it as the footprint of Lord Shiva (Shivan Oli Padam); while Christians and Muslims honor it as the footprint of Adam upon his exile from the Garden of Eden.

The traditional pilgrimage season extends from the full moon of December to the full moon of May. During these months, the mountain comes alive at night: the entire stone staircase of approximately 5,500 steps is illuminated by a winding ribbon of electric lights, with small tea shacks and refreshment stalls lining the path serving piping hot sweet tea, rotis, and herbal remedies. Pilgrims of all generations—from elderly grandmothers chanting devotional verses ('Karunawai') to eager international hikers—ascend together through the cool night air in a spirit of shared spiritual camaraderie.

Reaching the windswept mountain summit before dawn rewards climbers with one of the most unforgettable natural spectacles on Earth: the Sri Pada Sunrise (Ira Sewaya). As the first golden rays break over the eastern horizon, the sun casts an extraordinary, perfectly symmetrical triangular shadow of the mountain onto the blanket of clouds covering the western valley. At the summit temple, devotees ring the ancient brass bell once for each successful climb they have completed in their lifetime, filling the mountain air with resonant clangs of spiritual triumph.
