Galle Dutch Fortress

Galle Fort, positioned majestically on a rocky promontory overlooking the azure waters of the Indian Ocean on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, is Asia's best-preserved European fortified city. Originally established by Portuguese seafaring explorers in 1588 after being driven ashore by a storm, the fortress was heavily expanded, fortified, and redesigned by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) following their conquest in 1640.
