Negombo

Negombo, positioned along the shores of a scenic lagoon and the Indian Ocean just 10 kilometers north of Bandaranaike International Airport, is Sri Lanka's premier coastal gateway and the ideal starting or ending point for any holiday. Historically an important trading port for high-grade wild Ceylon cinnamon during the Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial eras, Negombo retains a rich colonial heritage and a strong Catholic culture, earning it the affectionate nickname 'Little Rome' due to its grand cathedrals, ornate wayside shrines, and centuries-old parish churches like St. Mary's Church with its magnificent painted ceiling murals.

The town's coastal strip (Lewis Place and Porutota Road) is a lively tourist boulevard lined with seaside luxury hotels, boutique resorts, western cafes, Ayurvedic spas, and seafood restaurants serving fresh grilled jumbo prawns, lobster, and lagoon crab caught that very day. The wide sandy beach offers panoramic ocean views, golden sunsets, and traditional timber outrigger sailing catamarans (Oruwas) gliding across the water with their distinctive billowing sails.

One of Negombo's most captivating cultural highlights is the vibrant Negombo Lellama (Fish Market). Located at the lagoon entrance, this bustling market offers a raw, authentic look at traditional coastal life as hundreds of traditional fishing boats arrive at dawn with fresh catches of tuna, seer fish, squid, and crabs, while rows of silver fish dry under the tropical sun on vast burlap mats along the sand. Visitors can also take a leisurely boat cruise along the historic 17th-century Dutch Canal (Hamilton Canal), gliding past mangrove shores, water monitor lizards, and quiet fishing hamlets.
